Two freight trains derailed Thursday in the middle of town, injuring at least three people in two automobiles waiting to cross the tracks, authorities said.

At least 15 cars of one train derailed, knocking some cars of another train off their tracks, said authorities and the trains' owner, CSX Corp. The cause of the initial derailment was unknown.

A hospital said that one person in the automobiles was in fair condition and that another had been released after treatment. No details were available on the third person's condition.

"The train derailed and hit those cars," said Don Baltz, fire chief in the northwestern Ohio town.

A train carrying mixed freight was heading west when it derailed shortly after noon, CXS spokesman Gary Sease said. The other train, carrying coal, was facing east on a different track.
