GIRDLETREE, Md. – A couple and two of their grandchildren were found dead in a home on Virginia's Eastern Shore, and a relative surrendered Saturday after a manhunt and car chase, authorities said.
Ronald Shrieves, 32, was arrested near Girdletree after officers chased the pickup truck he was riding in, said Worcester County Sheriff Chuck Martin. Maryland authorities were holding him on traffic charges.
"A lot of guns pointing, but no injuries," was how Martin described Shrieves' surrender. "He was not armed at the time."
It was unclear how he was related to the victims, Martin said.
Authorities are investigating the killings of Harry L. Shrieves Sr., 68, and his wife, Edna, 58, along with two of their grandchildren. The children's names were not released. Their bodies were found Friday, but it was unclear how they died.
The children's mother discovered the bodies Friday night at the home in Accomac, Va., about 30 miles south of Girdletree, when she went to pick up the children, WBOC-TV reported.
Between 60 and 70 officers had been looking for Ronald Shrieves since then, Martin said. Someone spotted a vehicle described in news reports and called authorities Saturday morning.
