12/17/01:  Al Qaeda fighters appear to be defeated in their last stronghold, the Tora Bora mountains. Some Al Qaeda troops were reportedly crying upon being captured, begging not to be turned over to the United States. 12/16/01:  The last pocket of Al Qaeda resistance appears to be crumbling at Tora Bora. Some groups of fighters loyal to Usama bin Laden are said to be surrendering, and others running or dying at the hands of tribal fighters and U.S. bombs. 11/29/01: There are reports of lawlessness and chaos all over Afghanistan at the hands of young armed men. Some of them are targeting journalists, eight of whom have died covering this story. 11/28/01: Kunduz, the northern Afghan city recently liberated from Taliban control, is still far from safe. The jails are emptied of their Taliban prisoners, but gangs of armed teen-agers roam the streets with nothing constructive to do. The reality of life after the Taliban is far from pretty.
