FORT LEWIS, Wash. – The condition of retired Army Gen. John Shalikashvili (search), who chaired the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the Clinton administration, has been upgraded from guarded to serious but stable.
Madigan Army Medical Center (search) spokesman Mike Meines said Monday the change indicates Shalikashvili's condition has improved. He said he was barred by privacy rules from providing further details.
Shalikashvili, 68, was hospitalized Aug. 7. Friends have said he suffered a brain hemorrhage.
Shalikashvili spoke at the Democratic National Convention in July, endorsing John Kerry for president.
