Four bodies were found in a vacant lot next to a church Friday morning, police said.

Three of the victims were male and one female, though it was not known whether they were shot or bludgeoned, said Lt. Derek Glenn, a Newark (search) police spokesman.

"There's visible trauma to the head, and the individuals appear to be possibly late teens to possibly 30," Glenn said.

A woman was walking by the lot next to the St. Thomas Aquinas Church in the southern part of the city when she noticed what she thought were four bodies. She told a church groundskeeper, who checked on the situation and discovered the bodies, he said.

The bodies were taken to the medical examiner, and none of the victims has been identified. Results of autopsies might not be known until Monday, Glenn said.
