Virginia State Police say an 85-year-old man has died after crashing into a safety patrol truck that had stopped to assist a disabled vehicle.

The crash occurred shortly after noon Friday on Interstate 95 in Lorton.

Police say a Virginia Department of Transportation safety services truck was stopped on the right shoulder with its warning lights on.

A Kia Ronda driven by Richard C. Mummert, of Pompano Beach, Fla., ran into the back of the VDOT truck. The impact caused the Kia to spin around and into the path of a Ford pickup truck, which struck the Kia.

Mummert died at the scene. Police say he wasn't wearing a seat belt.

The drivers of the VDOT truck and the Ford pickup were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
