NORFOLK, Va. – The Coast Guard (search) says it has stopped a freighter from entering one of America's busiest ports because the captain was drunk.
The 214-foot General Lee (search) and its cargo of wood stumps remains anchored about ten miles off the coast of Virginia and the Port of Hampton Roads.
The same ship was detained in Savannah, Georgia, less than a month ago for safety violations.
Officials say this time the captain failed a field sobriety test and refused to take a breath test. Inspectors who boarded the ship say they found an open container of alcohol in the captain's cabin.
The Coast Guard plans to seek civil penalties against the ship's operator. The captain hasn't been charged with any crime.
