Dr. Douglas P. Zipes, MD

Dr. Douglas P. Zipes is a distinguished professor at Indiana University's School of Medicine, Department of Medicine and Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology.  He joined Indiana University in 1970 and became Distinguished Professor of Medicine, Pharmacology and Toxicology, in 1994, and Director of the Cardiology Division and Krannert Institute of Cardiology in 1995.

He is on the Board of Directors/Trustees of the North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology, of which he is past president; the American Board of Internal Medicine; and the Institute for Clinical Evaluation.  He recently served terms on the Board of Directors/Trustees of the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology.  He is past president of the Association of University Cardiologists, chairman of the subspecialty board on Cardiovascular Disease and past chairman of Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Test Writing Committee, both for the American Board of Internal Medicine.  Dr. Zipes is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology and Cardiology in Review. He is on the editorial board of many cardiology journals and has published almost 600 articles and 11 books.

He received the Distinguished Achievement Award from the American Heart Association in 1989, the Distinguished Scientist Award in 1995 from the North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology, the Distinguished Scientist Award in 1996 from the American College of Cardiology, the Herrick Award from the American Heart Association in 1997, and the Sagamore of the Wabash award or Indiana governor Frank O'Bannon, the highest honor bestowed upon a citizen of Indiana by the governor.

Dr. Zipes received his B.A. cum laude from Dartmouth College in 1961, his M.D. cum laude from Harvard Medical School in 1964 and his postgraduate training at Duke University Medical Center from 1964 to 1968.
