GREG KELLY, GUEST HOST: Tonight: shot to death in their sleeping bags on a California beach. Two camp counselors have been found murdered, and now police fear a killer is on the loose.

LT. DAVD EDMONDS, SONOMA CO. SHERIFF'S DEPT.: This crime is obviously horrendous. And in any jurisdiction, you know, this is a terrible act. And we haven't been able to establish a motive for this crime. It's very disconcerting and disturbing for us.
There was property of value that was at the scene, and it appears that it wasn't disturbed. There's no indication that there was any struggle, nor is there any indication of any sort of sexual assault or other form of assault. So the nature of the crime is one that obviously has our senses heightened.

KELLY: Let's go straight to Sacramento, where Marian Schwenn is covering the gruesome crime for "The Mountain Democrat" newspaper. Marian, thanks for joining us. First of all, right off the bat, authorities have any idea who did this?
MARIAN SCHWENN, "MOUNTAIN DEMOCRAT" NEWSPAPER: No, not at this point, they don't.
KELLY: You have been receiving briefings for most of the evening. Tell me about the area where this actually happened. And why was it, at least in media circles, they were throwing out the idea of a murder-suicide?
SCHWENN: Originally, I believe they were throwing out the idea of murder-suicide when they weren't exactly sure what had happened to the couple. They were later found on the beach, both of them apparently shot in the head. No weapon has been, at this point, found at the scene, so they are speculating that, at this point, it is a double homicide, as opposed to suicide or murder.
KELLY: And there they are, a 26-year-old and a 23-year-old that. They were engaged to be married I believe next month, September 11, in Ohio.
SCHWENN: Correct.
KELLY: Camp counselors. Authorities have gone out of their way to describe these two individuals as really good kids.
SCHWENN: They have. We had a press conference I attended today in El Dorado County, and we were with the four parents of the two who had been killed, and they seem to be holding up very well. They're very strong people, very firmly grounded in their faith, at this point, and that's what's carrying them through. They speak very highly of both of their children, as does everyone who knew them, apparently. So...
KELLY: And you cover...
SCHWENN: ... it is a mystery.
KELLY: You cover this area all the time. I mean, this kind of thing does not happen -- this is not New York City. A crime of this nature...
SCHWENN: Correct.
KELLY: ... and that scene almost unheard of?
SCHWENN: Pretty much unheard of, yes. People along the beach there are obviously concerned because it is such a rare occurrence for that area.
KELLY: OK, Marian, thanks for that information.
