WASHINGTON – A Mediterranean sandwich shop has joined a number of businesses in tourist-heavy areas that are now accepting the euro and other foreign currencies.
Scott and Arianne Bennett, owners of the Amsterdam Falafelshop in Adams Morgan say they didn't want to turn away trans-Atlantic travelers who hadn't yet stopped at a currency exchange or bank. Their shop doesn't take credit cards.
In addition to new "We Accept Euros" signs, conversion sheets are now kept near the store's cash register for employees. Dollar prices of menu items are converted and the change is given back to customers in dollars.
A Dupont Circle photographer also recently began accepting euros for prints.
In New York, several businesses in neighborhoods popular among tourists have also begun accepting the currency. The dollar has been trading at historic lows against the euro and fell even further last week.
