NEW YORK – Firefighters had to rescue a man from the Hudson River after he climbed off a Manhattan pier and tried to swim to the USS Intrepid, a World War II-era aircraft carrier.
The incident happened on Friday.
Firefighters say the 65-year-old swimmer appeared to be intoxicated.
A firefighter went into the water on a rope and helped the man climb a ladder to safety.
Authorities say the man was taken to a hospital for observation and treatment for minor injuries.
The Intrepid is now a floating museum, tied up at a berth on Manhattan's West Side.
