A British couple said they spotted Madeleine McCann, missing since last year, on the Spanish island of Majorca, Sky News reported on Friday.
The couple was walking on the beach when they saw the girl with two women. They went to their hotel to check Internet photos of McCann and believe it was her.
Madeleine McCann disappeared from her family’s vacation apartment when her parents were at dinner last May in Portugal. She was 3 when she vanished.
The McCann family thanked the couple through a spokesman. "Kate and Gerry are very grateful to the British couple concerned, however we can't go into any further detail until our investigators have checked out the report," spokesman Clarence Mitchell told Sky News.
Detectives hired by the Madeleine Fund are investigating. Local police are searching nearby hotels and vacation apartments.
