Coast Guard Offloads $100 Million Worth of Cocaine Seized in Caribbean Sea

The U.S. Coast Guard on Thursday was offloading 3,200 pounds of cocaine recently seized during a patrol of the Caribbean Sea, Local 10 reports.

The Coast Guard said an aircrew conducting patrols spotted a suspicious boat on March 18. When the smugglers saw the Coast Guard they began dumping bales of cocaine overboard, Local 10 reports.

The smugglers were able to get away, despite the aircrew’s use of warning shots and disabling fire to attempt to stop them.

Fifty bales of cocaine were recovered at an estimated street value of about $100 million. The Coast Guard seized a record $4.7 billion worth of cocaine in 2007, according to the Coast Guard.
