A bus in southern China (search) carrying a group celebrating International Women's Day (search) ran off a cliff, killing at least 22 people and injuring 22 others, the government said Tuesday.

Forty-four people were aboard the bus travelling along a narrow road near the city of Jiujiang in Jiangxi province when the accident occurred Monday afternoon, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

An earlier Xinhua report had put the number of people on the bus at 42, but a later story said investigators had changed the figure.

The passengers were from a local insurance company who were celebrating Tuesday's International Women's Day, it said.

The cause of the accident was under investigation.

Crashes caused by reckless driving, poor road conditions and overloaded vehicles are reported almost daily in China, where a rising number of people own cars due to the country's economic boom.

More than 107,000 people were killed in road accidents in China last year.
