China's Liu Zige has wiped 1.6 seconds off the world record in the women's 200-meter butterfly.

Liu was timed in 2 minutes, 1.81 seconds at China's National Games on Wednesday, domestic news agency Xinhua reported, eclipsing the previous world mark of 2:03.41 set by Australian Jessicah Schipper at this year's World Championships.

Liu, who won the same event at the Beijing Olympics last year to clinch China's only swimming gold medal of the games, won Wednesday's race by almost four seconds from Jiao Liuyang, who took silver in the Olympics.
