California Teen to Military: 'A Million Thanks'

LOS ANGELES – A California high school freshman is hoping to gather a million thank you notes for the military in time for Memorial Day.

Shauna Fleming (search), 15, has launched a campaign she calls "A Million Thanks" in honor of Military Appreciation Month. She's collecting letters of appreciation to current and past servicemen and women at home and overseas.

Fleming, who started the project after her dad challenged her to do something positive for Military Appreciation Month, has spread the word on the Internet and in hundreds of radio and TV interviews.

Soon after the Orange Lutheran High teen began publicizing “A Million Thanks,” the letters began rolling in from all over the world. She’s gotten 500,000 so far, with her classmates and school officials also pitching in.

Even country star John Michael Montgomery (search) is lending his name and voice to the effort: His hit “Letters from Home” has been adopted as the campaign’s theme song and he’s now making joint appearances with Fleming nationwide.

Though she may not hit the million mark by Monday, Fleming has received a number of awards and will be the subject of a book chronicling her attempt to lift the spirits of troops around the world.
