California Prison Riots Spur Officials to Transfer Prisoners

A California state prison where 175 inmates were injured in a riot remains locked down and more than 1,000 prisoners are being moved.

State prisons spokeswoman Terry Thornton says Saturday's fight at the California Institution for Men in Chino left 55 prisoners seriously injured, with 30 remaining hospitalized Monday.

Inmates also burned wooden dormitories. Thornton says more than 1,000 inmates are being temporarily moved to other facilities, most to a vacant youth detention center.

The Chino prison holds 5,900 men but was designed for 3,000. Thornton says it's unclear what role overcrowding played in the riot.

A prison spokesman says tension between black and Hispanic prisoners may have sparked the fight.
