A two-story abandoned building collapsed onto three neighboring houses and a construction supply store in northeastern Brazil, killing seven people and injuring seven others, firefighters said Wednesday.

Four adults and three children, including a 5-month-old, were listed as killed in the Tuesday evening collapse.

None of the other injuries were considered life-threatening, firefighters said.

Authorities were investigating what caused the collapse of the building in the historic center of Recife, about 1,200 miles northeast of Rio de Janeiro.

Firefighters were still searching through the debris and said there was still a risk of further collapse.

The abandoned building was occupied by squatters who set it on fire when they were evicted by police in August 2005, local media reported.
