A 14-year-old Boy Scout survived a harrowing bear attack by playing dead, MyFoxPhilly reported Monday.

Chris Malasics of Chester Springs, Pa., was on a camping trip in Hickory Run State Park Friday night when the bear tore down his tent around 11:30 p.m. Malasics tucked into a fetal position inside his sleeping back, avoiding serious injury as the bear tossed him around. He sustained bites and claw scratches, but was otherwise unharmed.

"My friend got pulled out by the bear and he came running back in and woke me up. I didn't think much about it and I was going to go back to bed," Malasics told MyFoxPhilly. "The bear comes to my side and steps on the tent and the tent collapses and there's a big hole and he rips me out with his mouth. Grabs my butt and flings me a round."

A scout leader tried to scare the bear away by banging pots and pans and flashing the car headlights, and the bear eventually fled.

Malasics was taken to the hospital and given a rabies shot.
