In 1990, launched longshot bid for Senate, touring Minnesota in rickety old green bus that became synonymous with his campaign. Scored stunning defeat of Republican Sen. Rudy Boschwitz. Afterward, left-leaning Mother Jones magazine called him "the first 1960s radical elected to the U.S. Senate." Wellstone had been in tough race for third term against former St. Paul Mayor Norm Coleman.
