FORKS, Wash. – A black bear attacked and seriously injured a hunter on a road just outside Olympic National Park late Saturday, authorities said.
A second hunter shot and killed the bear before summoning help, the Washington State Patrol told KOMO Television in Seattle.
Troopers from the state patrol's Clallam County office rushed the injured hunter to an area hospital. His condition was not immediately known.
KOMO reported he had suffered serious injuries to his arms and legs and had lost a lot of blood.
The state patrol said the attack happened around 9:30 p.m. and that the bear dragged the man away from the site of the attack before being shot.
Troopers said they receive occasional reports of cougar attacks in the area, but that bear attacks are relatively rare.
