NEW YORK – "Barbie wouldn't wear those dresses. Not even the gold one."
That was the final verdict of seven-year-old Barbie enthusiast Louise Kern-Kensler from her second row seat at Saturday's Barbie fashion show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
Celebrating the controversial doll's 50th birthday, fifty of fashion's top designers came up with "Barbie-inspired" outfits for the big event.
From titans Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, and Vera Wang to up-and-comers like Rag and Bone and Three Asfour, the Barbie outfits ranged from jeans and tee-shirt casual (Anna Sui) to over-the-top gowns most appropriate onstage at a Las Vegas casino (Bob Mackie).
While skeptical of Barbie wearing said outfits, Kern-Kensler and her three-year-old sister, Olive, also a Barbie devotee, still gave high marks to several designers, with Bob Mackie's glittering gown winning their grand prize (shiny goes a long way with the under-10 set).

But the best part of the fun show was the final runway walk, with each of the models accompanied by a little girl in a tutu and tee shirt, waving to the kid-filled crowd, as heart-shaped confetti fell from the ceiling.
And a new generation of Barbie fans is hooked.
