The south Mobile County girl who accidentally became hung up in a swing set has died, authorities said.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Kate Johnson said Teresa Jordan, 4, died at University of South Alabama Children's & Women's Hospital shortly before noon Wednesday. Johnson said an autopsy showed the cause of death was strangulation.

Teresa's 9-year-old brother found her hanging from the swing set Tuesday with a swing's rope around her neck.

Johnson said the girl's mother was outside with her but had stepped away for a moment. The maternal grandparents were inside the mobile home when the incident occurred in the yard.

Teresa's grandfather, Rickey Byrd, said he planned to take down the swing Friday.

"It took me 15 minutes just to pull into the driveway today," he told the Press-Register.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, about 15 children die each year because of playground equipment-related incidents.
