A Look At The Charges In The Muslim Charity Trial

A mistrial was declared Monday in the case of five former Muslim charity leaders accused of funding terrorists. The men were leaders of Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development in Richardson, Texas, which the government shut down in 2001. The defendants, and the result of charges against them:

— Shukri Abu Baker, chief executive: The jury failed to reach a decision on any of the 34 counts against him, including aiding a terrorist organization, conspiracy, money laundering and tax charges. Federal District Court Judge A. Joe Fish declared a mistrial on all charges, meaning he could be put on trial again.

— Ghassan Elashi, chairman: The jury failed to reach a decision on any of the 35 counts against him, including aiding a terrorist organization, conspiracy, money laundering and tax charges. The judge declared a mistrial on all charges.

— Mohammed El-Mezain, former chairman: The jury found him not guilty on 31 of 32 counts including aiding a terrorist organization, conspiracy and money laundering. A mistrial was declared on the last count, conspiracy to provide support to a designated foreign terrorist organization, meaning he could be retried on that single count.

— Abdulrahman Odeh, New Jersey representative: Jurors initially reported finding him not guilty on 30 of 32 counts including aiding a terrorist organization and money laundering, and couldn't decide on two counts of conspiracy. But after two jurors said they didn't agree with the verdict, the judge declared a mistrial on all 32 counts, wiping out the not-guilty findings.

— Mufid Abdulqader, a fundraiser: Jurors initially reported finding him not guilty on all 32 counts including aiding a terrorist organization, conspiracy and money laundering. After one juror said she didn't agree with the verdict, the judge declared a mistrial on all 32 counts, wiping out the not-guilty findings.

— Holy Land Foundation itself. The jury failed to reach a decision on any of the 32 counts against the defunct organization. The judge declared a mistrial on all charges.
