New York City police say three workers died doing some type of cleanup work in a sewage hole in Queens.

Firefighters were attempting to rescue the workers, but it is believed they were already dead when they arrived. They worked with a private contractor.

According to officials, two of the workers apparently went into the sewage hole to check it out and when he didn't return, the third worker went in.

A Fire Department spokesman says firefighters were alerted at 2:30 p.m. Monday and sent rescue units to the site on Douglas Avenue in the Jamaica neighborhood.
