Two people were killed and two were critically injured after a charter bus hit a median wall and utility poles heading southbound on I-85 near downtown Atlanta, police said.

Police were investigating the accident, which happened just after 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

Police spokesman Eric Schwartz said the driver struck a median wall and the steering parts underneath the bus broke.

The bus that had 20 passengers then hit utility poles, ejecting two people into the HOV lane, he said. It's not clear whether those two are the ones who died.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner's office identified the dead as Sharon E. Murray, 34, of Dunwoody, and Gary G. Pleasant, 64, of Atlanta.

Schwartz said others were also injured, but their injuries were not life-threatening.

No information was available on the condition of the driver early Sunday morning.
