With rotation hurting, Yankees bringing up top prospect Severino for start

CHICAGO -- Touted pitching prospect Luis Severino will make his next start with the New York Yankees.

Manager Joe Girardi said Friday that the 21-year-old right-hander will start at home next week against Boston but didn't specify when he would get the ball.

Severino is 7-0 with a 1.91 ERA at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He made his last start on Wednesday, striking out 10 while allowing three hits in six scoreless innings.

"He's earned it, and we need him," general manager Brian Cashman said during a telephone news conference after the non-waiver trade deadline. "So we'll see what the next step is for this youngster who is moving really fast through the system."

The Yankees' rotation is hurting.

"I like the team we have," Cashman said. "I know that we are dealing now with some recent trouble and we certainly are reacting to that trouble ... to kind of try to fortify.

"At the same time, we will be relying on our farm system as we have done all year."

AL East-leading New York was quiet at Friday's deadline, opting to hold on to its top prospects, including Severino, first baseman Greg Bird, outfielder Aaron Judge and shortstop Jorge Mateo.

Severino's arrival in the majors comes at a key time for the Yankees.

Right-hander Michael Pineda was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday with a right flexor forearm muscle strain and was replaced by CC Sabathia as the starter at Texas.

An MRI on Pineda's forearm showed no structural damage.

Pineda, who is 9-7 with a 3.97 ERA, missed all of 2012 and `13 following surgery to repair a torn labrum in his pitching shoulder and was sidelined for much of last year with a shoulder injury.

Sabathia left Thursday's 7-6 loss to the Rangers after throwing 80 pitches. The gametime temperature was 101 degrees, and the 35-year-old lefty was taken to a hospital with symptoms of dehydration.

He was discharged on Friday.

"Normally, I love to pitch in the heat, but not that Texas heat I guess," Sabathia said. "It just wore on me all night pretty much from the start until the end."

The 6-foot-7, 290-pound Sabathia rejoined the team on Friday for the start of a weekend series against the White Sox. Girardi said there was no timetable for Sabathia's return to baseball activities.
