Charlie Whitehurst completed 7-of-12 passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns to lead the San Diego Chargers to a 28-20 win over the Dallas Cowboys in NFL preseason action on Saturday night.

Phillip Rivers was 13-for-15 passing for 109 yards, but threw two interceptions for the Chargers, who finished with a disappointing 8-8 record last season.

Tony Romo completed 9-of-13 passes for 75 yards, and Kevin Ogletree hauled in four catches for 60 yards for the Cowboys, who is 1-1 in the preseason.

Dan Bailey's 40-yard field goal in the first quarter capped a 12-play, 39-yard drive.

After Brandon Carr picked off Rivers on the ensuing possession, Kyle Orton led the Cowboys down the field, and Olawale found the end zone from two yards out. Bailey's extra point gave the Cowboys a 10-0 lead.

The Chargers got on the board in the third quarter when Whitehurst delivered a perfect over-the-shoulder pass to Vincent Brown for an 18-yard touchdown. Brown was injured on the play, but held on for the score and the Chargers pulled within six.

Dallas recovered a fumble at the San Diego 35-yard line, but it couldn't find the end zone and was forced to settle for a 49-yard Bailey field goal.

Shareece Wright picked off Stephen McGee and returned it 73 yards, but was tackled on the two-yard line. Two plays later Jackie Battle found the end zone to put San Diego up 14-13.

Whitehurst found Mike Willie for a 38-yard touchdown and Jacob Hester punched one in from four yards out in the fourth to put the Chargers up 28-13.

Ryan Carpenter connected with Dwayne Harris with 53 seconds to play to make it 28-20, but Dallas couldn't recover on onside kick and San Diego held on for the win.
