The Detroit Red Wings reeled in one of the bigger fish in the free agent pool, signing two-way forward Stephen Weiss to a five-year contract.

Weiss, 30, joins the Red Wings after spending his entire career with the Florida Panthers. His final season in the Sunshine State was limited to 17 games because of wrist surgery.

The Ontario native was taken fourth overall by the Panthers in the 2001 draft and leaves as the club's all-time leader in games played (654) and assists (249). He ranks second in points (394) and fourth in goals (145).
