Villarreal has fired manager Juan Carlos Garrido, following the struggling club's loss in the Copa del Rey.

Villarreal has just three wins in 16 La Liga matches, dropped all six of its Champions League matches, and exited the Copa del Rey on Wednesday after a 3-1 aggregate loss to third-division side Mirandes.

"It is clear that we have failed," Garrido said on the club's website. "I take my responsibility as leader of the group. I take my dismissal because the team has been disastrous and shameful.

"Now, I have only words of gratitude to the club," he added, "and its board for the way they have treated me all these years."

The Yellow Submarines are just five points off the bottom of the La Liga table and level with Sporting Gijon for a relegation spot on just 15 points.

Garrido spent years coaching Villarreal's B team, and took over the first team in February of 2010.
