Charleston, SC (SportsNetwork.com) - Former world No. 1s Jelena Jankovic and Venus Williams each posted second-round victories Wednesday at the Family Circle Cup tennis event.
The second-seeded Jankovic, who was the 2007 Charleston champ, had little trouble disposing of American Lauren Davis, 6-0, 6-3.
Williams, seeded 11th this week, got past South African Chanelle Scheepers 7-5, 7-5 in 1 hour, 48 minutes on the green clay at Family Circle Tennis Center, where she titled 10 years ago.
Williams' third-round opponent will be second-seeded rising Canadian Eugenie Bouchard.
Meanwhile, third-seeded former French Open runner-up Sara Errani of Italy was leading Kiki Bertens 6-3 after one set when the Dutch qualifier retired, fourth-seeded 2013 Wimbledon runner-up Sabine Lisicki held off American Vania King 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 and Ukrainian Elina Svitolina doused fifth-seeded American Sloane Stephens 6-4, 6-4 on Day 3. Lisicki was the Charleston champion in 2009.
Twelfth-seeded former top-10 performer Daniela Hantuchova moved on by blasting American qualifier Grace Min 6-2, 6-3, Chinese Peng Shuai outlasted 15th- seeded American hopeful Madison Keys 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-4), and Ajla Tomljanovic defeated 16th-seeded Zhang Shuai, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.
In other second-round action, 13th-seeded Russian Elena Vesnina overcame Czech Petra Cetkovska 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, 14th-seeded German Andrea Petkovic double- bageled Spaniard Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-0, 6-0 and Swiss qualifier Belinda Bencic blitzed Marina Erakovic of New Zealand 6-2, 6-1. Vesnina was a runner- up here three years ago.
