New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Connecticut will start the women's college basketball season the same way it ended the 2013-14 campaign, as the top team in the nation.
UConn won its ninth national championship last April with a 79-58 drubbing of previously unbeaten Notre Dame and on Thursday received all 35 first-place votes from a nationwide media panel in the preseason Associated Press poll.
It's the 10th time the Huskies, who ended last season 40-0, will start the season as the nation's top team. They went on to win the national title on six of those occasions.
South Carolina, Notre Dame, Tennessee and Texas A&M round out the top five.
Stanford, Duke, Baylor, Texas and Maryland are teams six through 10. The next 10 consist of Kentucky, Louisville, North Carolina, Michigan State, California, Nebraska, West Virginia, DePaul, Iowa and Oregon State. Oklahoma State, Dayton, UCLA, Rutgers and Syracuse finish out the top 25.
