Gelsenkirchen, Germany (SportsNetwork.com) - Schalke defender Atsuto Uchida has signed a three-year contract extension with the club that keeps him at the Veltins Arena until June 2018.
Uchida, 26, arrived at Schalke in 2010 from Japanese side Kashima Antlers and he has established himself as a key piece for the club, appearing in 132 competitive matches and helping Schalke capture the 2011 Pokal Cup.
"Schalke is a very special club with wonderful fans who have always supported me in the last few years," Uchida told the club's official website.
"The atmosphere in the Veltins Arena is outstanding. I want to thank our supporters for their confidence."
The Japan international has started five games in the Bundesliga this season for Schalke, which resides in 12th place through nine league matches.
