Oeiras, Portugal (SportsNetwork.com) - Fifth seed Dmitry Tursunov failed to win a game Tuesday in his first-round match at the $590,000 Portugal Open, a clay court French Open tune-up.
Portuguese wild card Rui Machado double-bageled the Russian Tursunov 6-0, 6-0 in a mere 47 minutes on Day 2.
More upsets came when Argentine qualifier Leonardo Mayer knocked out sixth- seeded Portuguese Joao Sousa 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 and Poland's Lukasz Kubot erased seventh-seeded Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili 6-3, 7-5.
Additional wins came for Argentine Carlos Berlocq, Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas, Romanian Victor Hanescu, Spaniards Albert Montanes and qualifier Daniel Gimeno-Traver, and Indian Somdev Devvarman. The two-time former Portugal Open champion Montanes handled fellow Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. Carballes Baena joined the draw as a lucky loser, replacing last week's Barcelona runner-up Santiago Giraldo, as the Colombian pulled out of the field in Oeiras, citing fatigue.
Top-seeded Czech star Tomas Berdych will face Devvarman in a second-round affair on Thursday, while second-seeded Canadian slugger Milos Raonic will take on Cuevas.
The 2014 Oeiras champion will collect $107,000.
