TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) Florida State quarterback Sean Maguire has a broken bone in his right foot, putting freshman Deondre Francois in position to open the season as the starter.
Coach Jimbo Fisher revealed the injury Saturday after the team's practice, saying Maguire broke the bone Wednesday. The fracture wasn't confirmed until Friday.
Maguire is in a walking boot and will have a screw inserted into the foot early next week. Fisher said it is likely that the senior would miss 3-4 weeks. Florida State opens the season Sept. 5 in Orlando against Mississippi.
Francois put himself into contention for the starting spot with a solid spring and threw a pair of touchdowns in the spring game.
This would be the second time in four years a redshirt freshman has started at QB for the Seminoles. In 2013, Jameis Winston won the Heisman and led them to the national championship.
