Fort Worth, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - David Toms shot 5-under 65 on Saturday and he moved into a share of the lead after three rounds of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.
Toms was joined at 7-under-par 203 by Hideki Matsuyama (64), Chris Stroud (69) and Chad Campbell (68).
Kevin Chappell fired the low round of the day Saturday with his 7-under 63. He vaulted from the cut line of plus-1 into a tie for fifth at minus-6. Chappell was joined there by Tim Clark (69), Jimmy Walker (69), Brian Harman (68), Marc Leishman (67) and Chris Kirk (67).
World No. 1 Adam Scott and John Senden both shot 4-under 66 to move into a tie for 11th at 5-under 205 at Colonial Country Club. They share 11th with Brian Davis (70), Freddie Jacobson (67), Jason Dufner (69), Bo Van Pelt (70) and Brendon Todd (67).
Toms, the 2011 champion, opened with a pair of 9-foot birdie putts at one and two. He failed to save par from a bunker on No. 3 and dropped back to minus-3. He nearly holed his approach at the ninth, but settled for a tap-in birdie.
Around the turn, Toms birdied the 10th and 11th to move to 6-under. He picked up his final birdie at the 15th.
"I didn't get off to a very start on Thursday, kind of got behind the eight- ball there, but I've come back with two solid rounds to give myself a chance," Toms said. "I like the golf course. I knocked a couple real close to get my round going."
Matsuyama got off to a fast start with three birdies in a 4-hole span from the second. He ran off four straight pars from the sixth. Matsuyama moved to minus-5 with a birdie on the par-5 11th. He climbed into a share of the lead with birdies on 14 and 16.
Stroud stumbled to a bogey on the second. After three pars in a row, he came back with birdies at six and seven to move to minus-7. Stroud remained there as he ran off nine consecutive pars from the eighth.
At the 17th, Stroud found a greenside bunker with his approach and failed to get up and down for par. He erased that mistake with a 15-foot birdie effort at the last.
"Very happy the way I finished. I'm putting great this week, but I left a few out there," Stroud admitted. "The biggest thing for me is that I don't have to do anything special. Play within myself and I'll have a shot."
Campbell, the 2004 runner-up, started with a birdie on the second. He traded a bogey for a birdie from the fifth. Campbell converted a 4-foot birdie try on No. 8 and he made the turn at 7-under.
At the par-5 11th, Campbell drained a 21-foot birdie to join Walker in the lead at 8-under. Campbell 3-putted for bogey on the 13th to dip to minus-7, and he finished there with five straight pars.
"I played pretty solid on the front, but stumbled a little bit on the back. I'm happy where I sit," Campbell said. "I've always enjoyed playing here, and it is probably my favorite stop on tour."
Walker bogeyed the 13th and 15th to fall from the lead into a tie for fifth at minus-6.
