The Portland Timbers announced on Friday that the club has signed goalkeeper Joe Bendik, who spent the past two seasons in Norway with Sogndal.

"Joe is a young and upcoming goalkeeper that has done well in preseason," said Timbers head coach John Spencer. "He has definitely raised the level of goalkeeping for the Timbers squad."

Bendik, 22, began his professional career in 2010, appearing in 11 matches overall for Sogndal while also representing the U.S. national team at the Under-17 and U-18 levels.

The Marietta, Ga. native started the final four games of the 2010 season for Sogndal, which earned promotion to the top-flight at the end of the campaign. He made five appearances in the Tippeligaen during the 2011 season.
