Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - PGA TOUR - OHL CLASSIC AT MAYAKOBA, El Camaleon Golf Club, Playa del Carmen, Mexico - The PGA Tour is in Mexico this week for the final official event of the fall.
Harris English returns to El Camaleon Golf Course to defend his title. It was a long final day last year for English.
After weather problems earlier in the week, English played the final 29 holes of the tournament on Sunday. He trailed Robert Karlsson by one entering the final round, but English fired a 6-under 65 to cruise to a 4-stroke win.
The victory was the second of the season and second of his career for English. Karlsson stumbled to a 1-over 72 in the final round and fell into a share of sixth place.
English has struggled of late. Dating to the Open Championship, he has missed the cut in six of his last nine starts. He did tie for 16th in Las Vegas, but followed with a missed cut at The McGladrey Classic.
The field this week includes former major champions Angel Cabrera, Padraig Harrington, Lucas Glover, Justin Leonard, Davis Love III and Mike Weir. While that group will be among the headliners, five other players -- Brice Garnett, James Hahn, Jeff Overton, Heath Slocum and Nicholas Thompson -- will all be playing their sixth straight fall event.
Golf Channel will have coverage of all four rounds from 2-5 p.m. ET.
The next PGA Tour event is the Hero World Challenge, hosted by Tiger Woods. Zach Johnson beat Woods in a playoff last year in California, and he will defend his title at Isleworth Golf & Country Club as the event moves to Florida this year.
EUROPEAN TOUR
TURKISH AIRLINES OPEN, Montgomerie Maxx Royal course, Antalya, Turkey - The European Tour is in Turkey this week for the third event of the finals series, the Turkish Airlines Open.
Last year, Victor Dubuisson fired four rounds in the 60s en route to a 2- stroke win over Jamie Donaldson. Justin Rose and Tiger Woods shared third place, four strokes off the pace.
Dubuisson had never finished better than third on the European Tour before winning this event last year. He is still searching for his second victory.
The Frenchman has had seven top-10 finishes since January, including three runner-ups finishes. He shared ninth at the Open Championship and tied for seventh at the PGA Championship. Those top finishes helped Dubuisson make his first European Ryder Cup team, where he went 2-0-1.
Dubuisson had to withdraw last week at the WGC-HSBC Champions with a back injury, so he status for this week is in question.
Course designer Colin Montgomerie will be in the field this week along with Jamie Donaldson, Sergio Garcia, Marcel Siem, Martin Kaymer, Henrik Stenson, Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood.
Donaldson, Garcia and Siem can still catch Rory McIlroy for the top spot in the Race to Dubai standings, but they would have to win this event and next week in Dubai as well.
Golf Channel will have early morning coverage of all four rounds this week.
The last event of the finals series, the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai, is next week. Henrik Stenson rolled to a 6-stroke win last year as he won the final event on both the PGA and European Tours and won the big bonuses that came with winning the FedExCup and the Race to Dubai.
LPGA TOUR
LORENA OCHOA INVITATIONAL, Club de Golf Mexico, Mexico City, Mexico - The LPGA Tour has completed its six-week Asian swing, but still remains outside the United States as the tour is in Mexico this week.
Lexi Thompson won the Lorena Ochoa Invitational last year as she closed with a 69 to fend off Stacy Lewis. Thompson needed to birdie the final hole to claim the title.
The victory was Thompson's second of 2013 and third of her career. She added her first major championship title earlier this year when she won the Kraft Nabisco Championship. Thompson is among 12 players that have won this year on the LPGA Tour that are in the field this week.
The 36-player field this week includes 14 of the top-20 players in the world, including eight of the top 10. Five of the six previous winners -- Thompson, Cristie Kerr, Catriona Matthew, Michelle Wie and Angela Stanford -- are playing as well.
Golf Channel will have coverage from 5-7 p.m. ET all four days.
The LPGA Tour returns to the U.S. next week for the final official event of 2014, the CME Group Titleholders. Shanshan Feng rallied for a narrow 1-shot win over Gerina Piller at that event last year.
