Porto, Portugal (SportsNetwork.com) - Tim Thelen shot a final-round, even-par 72 on Sunday and he was able to hang on and win the Senior Open de Portugal by one shot.
Thelen finished the week at 12-under 204 for his fourth victory on the European Senior Tour. This is Thelen's first win on tour since he won three events in 2012.
Already in the lead to start the day, the American got off to a slow start on the front nine as he made eight pars and a bogey on the fifth hole at Vidago Palace.
Making the turn at 1-over, Thelen made his first birdie on the par-4 10th hole. After rattling off six straight pars, Thelen briefly got into red numbers with another gain on No. 17. He gave that shot back at the last, but it was good enough to seal Thelen's victory.
Thelen had to hold off a surging Miguel Angel Martin, who carded a 5-under 67 to finish one shot back at 11-under 205.
Carl Mason and Des Smyth shot matching 71s to finish tied for third at 10- under 206. Angel Franco (65), Jose Rivero (68), Steen Tinning (69), Chris Williams (71) and Greg Turner (72) all tied for fifth at minus-9.
