Decathlete Ashton Eaton (Eugene, Ore.) set a new world record at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field after recording 9,039 points on June 23 in Eugene, Ore. Sanya Richards-Ross (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) also set a world best, running the 400-meter dash in 49.28. In addition to Eaton and Richards-Ross, 19 other athletes earned nominations to London on the opening days of trials.
DIVERS MAKE A SPLASH AT TRIALS
Multiple divers punched their tickets to London at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials held June 17-24 in Federal Way, Wash. Nominated athletes include 3-meter divers Cassidy Krug (Coraopolis, Pa.), Christina Loukas (Riverwoods, Ill.), Troy Dumais (Ventura, Calif.), Kristian Ispen (Clayton, Calif.), Kelci Bryant (Chatham, Ill.), Abby Johnson (Upper Arlington, Ohio) and Chris Colwill (Brandon, Fla.), and 10-meter divers David Boudia (Noblesville, Ind.), Nick McCrory, Brittany Viola (Orlando, Fla.) and Katie Bell (Columbus, Ohio).
ARCHERY
U.S. archers continued world cup play in Ogden, Utah, on June 24, and for the first time since 2004, the U.S. women's archery squad qualified for the Olympic Games. Making the team after their stellar performances at the shoot-off were Khatuna Lorig (Bloomfield, N.J.), Miranda Leek (Des Moines, Iowa) and Jennifer Nichols (Cheyenne, Wyo.). In addition to qualifying for London, Team USA archers earned nine medals and claimed six spots in the world cup final.
BASKETBALL
Jahlil Okafor (Chicago, Ill.) scored 26 points and had 15 rebounds as the U.S. Men's Under-17 National Team rolled past Latvia, 108-72, on June 24 at the world championships in Las Palmas, Canary Islands.
Team USA defeated Brazil, 81-56, on June 20 to claim the FIBA Americas U18 Championship title in Sao Sebastiao do Paraiso, Brazil.
CANOE/KAYAK
Jim Wade (Boise, Idaho) finished 22nd in the kayak semifinals of the slalom world cup in Spain on June 23. In women's canoe, Micki Reeves (Grand Junction, Colo.) and Colleen Hickey (Okawville, Ill.) placed 13th and 15th in the semifinals.
CYCLING
Three U.S. cyclists took home medals at the world cup in Monte-Sainte-Anne, Que., held June 23-24. Aaron Gwin (Temecula, Calif.) rode to his third consecutive mountain bike world cup victory, while Georgia Gould (Fort Collins, Colo.) earned a silver medal in the women's cross-country race. In the junior cross-country race, Keegan Swenson (Park City, Utah) outpaced his competitors to bring home the gold medal.
USA Cycling crowned two new champions in the elite men's and women's races at the national championships held June 20-24 in Augusta, Ga. Megan Guarnier (Mountain View, Calif.) sprinted ahead of teammate Lauren Hall (Dolores, Colo.) to claim her first national title, while Julian Kyer (Boulder, Colo.) claimed victory in the men's race.
EQUESTRIAN
Laura Kraut (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) and horse Cedric were unstoppable at the Syndicaat van de Rotterdamse Havenbedrijven Prix, riding to a first-place finish on June 21 in the Netherlands.
FENCING
Saber fencer Mariel Zagunis (Chicago, Ill.) picked up her seventh consecutive podium finish at the Korfanty Cup in Chicago on June 23.
FIELD HOCKEY
The U.S. Women's National Team wrapped-up a four-game series against Argentina on June 24 in London. Overall, Team USA finished 1-1-2.
GYMNASTICS
Team USA men concluded the 2012 Junior Pan American Championships with a team silver medal on June 22 in Indianapolis.
JUDO
Kayla Harrison (Wakefield, Mass.) defeated 2009 world champion Marhinde Verkerk (Netherlands) at the European Cup, capturing gold in the 78 kg. division in Prague on June 24. Meanwhile, Marti Malloy (Oak Harbor, Wash.) took silver in the 57 kg. division.
SOCCER
The U.S. Under-23 Women's National Team lost to Norway, 4-2, on June 19 in St. Jordalen, Norway.
The Under-20 Women's National Team closed out a two-game series against Japan with a 2-0 victory in Osaka, Japan, on June 20. Team USA lost its opening match against Japan, 1-0, on June 17.
SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING
The U.S. synchronized duet team of Mariya Koroleva (Concord, Calif.) and Mary Killman (McKinney, Texas) took fourth at the Spanish Open on June 23 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
TEAM HANDBALL
Team USA defeated Argentina, 30-25, on day seven of the Pan Am Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on June 24. Earlier in the week, the U.S. went 1-1 against Argentina, losing 26-24 and winning 29-28.
TENNIS
Andy Roddick (Austin, Texas) won the Eastbourne Championships on June 23 after defeating defending champion Andreas Seppi of Italy, 6-3, 6-2, in Eastbourne, England. On June 22, Roddick picked up his 600th career singles win after a forfeit win over Steve Darcis of Belgium.
TRIATHLON
Martha Hall (Tyrone, Ga.) and David Luscan (Richmond, Va.) outpaced their competition to win national titles at the USA Triathlon Aquabike National Championship on June 24 in Richmond, Va.
In his first career world triathlon series start, Lukas Verzbicas (Colorado Springs, Colo.) recorded the day's second-fastest run split time on June 24 in Kitzbuhel, Austria. Despite the quick split time, Verzbicas crossed the finish line behind 31 other competitors. On the women's side, Sara Goff (Hanover, N.H.) and Gwen Jorgensen (Milwaukee, Wis.) recorded seventh- and 11th-place finishes.
VOLLEYBALL
The U.S. Women's National Team concluded its preliminary rounds of the FIVB World Grand Prix with a 9-0 record after defeating Thailand, 25-16, 25-17, 25-7, on June 24 in Bangkok, Thailand. One day earlier, Team USA defeated Argentina, 25-23, 25-17, 25-12.
Team USA men continued world league play on June 24 in Gwangju, Korea, with a 25-20, 25-18, 25-18 victory over Korea. On June 23, the team edged-out France, 25-21, 25-21, 25-20.
WATER POLO
USA Water Polo clubs had a strong showing at the world masters in Italy on June 22, bringing home a variety of medals in multiple age groups.
