Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Toronto FC announced on Monday that the club has signed Poland international defender Damien Perquis to help bolster a poor defense.
Only four teams in MLS gave up more goals than TFC last term, and the club is hopeful the addition of the 30-year-old Perquis can strengthen a unit that includes Steven Caldwell and Nick Hagglund.
"Damien's signing addresses an area we wanted to improve upon this offseason. His experience and leadership both at club and international level will be a welcomed addition to our team," Toronto FC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said. "Damien has a great defensive sense and will provide an upside on the ball with his strong distribution from the back. We are very excited to bring him to Toronto FC."
Perquis grew up in France and began his professional career with Troyes, St Etienne and Sochaux before moving to Real Betis in Spain for the 2012-13 season.
He became a Polish citizen in January 2011 and made his international debut for Poland that same year before going on to earn 13 caps.
Perquis played all three games for Poland at Euro 2012, and he is joined in Toronto by another new addition on Monday after TFC traded a second-round pick in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft to Seattle Sounders FC for the rights to forward Eriq Zavaleta.
