Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops hasn't decided on who his starting quarterback will be

But he did say he and his staff would like to make a decision as soon as possible.

"It's always the earlier the better," Stoops said. "We can't force it until it's earned."

Stoops and the Sooners are trying to decide between Trevor Knight and Baker Mayfield. Cody Thomas is considered to be a longshot. Meanwhile, Oklahoma also has a new offensive coordinator in Lincoln Riley who has his opinions on the way the race is shaping up.

"I don't believe in playing two guys just to do it," Riley said Saturday at OU's Media Day. "I think a guy's got to be able to have some room to make mistakes and to grow."

Mayfield is a transfer from Texas Tech. Knight is 11-4 as a starter, including a Sugar Bowl win over Alabama after the 2013 season.
