Frisco, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - The Dallas Stars signed defenseman John Klingberg to a seven-year contract extension on Friday.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but the Dallas Morning News reported it has an average annual value of $4.25 million.

Klingberg had 11 goals and 29 assists in 65 games this season. He led all NHL rookie defensemen in assists and points.

"John is a very special player, possessing a creativity and skill level that few in this league can match," said Stars general manager Jim Nill. "He fits in perfectly with where our core is at age-wise and his impact on our team was felt immediately. We expect him to build off of his rookie season and continue his development towards becoming an elite all-around defenseman."

The 22-year-old native of Gothenburg, Sweden was selected by Dallas in the fifth round of the 2010 NHL Draft. He played in both the Swedish and Finnish elite leagues before coming to North America full-time this season.
