JACKSON, Miss. – Damien Goodwin dunked with just more than a minute left to give Southern a 10-point lead and the Jaguars cruised to a 68-63 win at Jackson State Monday night.
Calvin Godfrey, YonDarius Johnson and Tre Lynch each pumped in 15 points for Southern (14-10, 10-1 SWAC), which now leads the conference standings by two full games after second-place Alabama State fell to Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Godfrey pulled down nine rebounds.
The Jaguars built a nine-point lead at intermission, then held off a Jackson State rally.
Southern was 22 of 48 from the field and 10 of 15 from long range.
Julysses Nobles tossed in 20 points to lead the Tigers (8-15, 4-7). Derrell Taylor added 14 points and Brandon West contributed 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.
Jackson State shot 36 percent from the field (18 of 50) and was 4 of 6 from long range.
