The Cubs are close to a one-year deal with free-agent outfielder Xavier Nady, according to a major-league source.

Nady, 31, would will play right field against left-handed pitching and also spell Alfonso Soriano in left.

However, the deal is contingent on Nady passing a physical, which is "not a foregone conclusion," the source said.

Nady is coming off his second Tommy John surgery. The Cubs want to be satisfied that he can throw adequately before agreeing to the deal.

Nady has played eight major league seasons with the Padres, Mets, Pirates and Yankees. He is a career .280 hitter with 87 home runs and 325 RBIs.
