Leverkusen, Germany (SportsNetwork.com) - A goal from Heung-Min Son in the 53rd minute helped Bayer Leverkusen to a 2-1 comeback win over Werder Bremen on Saturday at the BayArena, allowing Leverkusen to secure the final Champions League place.
Leverkusen entered the final day just one point clear of fifth-place Wolfsburg, and knew that anything other than a win on Saturday could potentially see the club drop out of the top four.
And things did not start well for the hosts as Bremen took the lead in the 21st minute through Theodor Gebre Selassie, who found the bottom left corner of the net from 10 yards after being set up by Aaron Hunt.
However, Omer Toprak had Leverkusen back on level terms in the 33rd minute when he got up to head home Emre Can's corner kick.
Leverkusen continued to pressure the Bremen net, and in the 53rd minute, Son put his team in front with a header from six yards after Eren Derdiyok nodded the ball off the crossbar.
From there, Leverkusen saw out the rest of the match without too much difficulty, and the result clinches fourth place for the club, leaving them one point clear of Wolfsburg, which notched a 3-1 win over Monchengladbach to give themselves a chance.
At the bottom of the table, Braunschweig finished its campaign on the bottom of the league following a 3-1 defeat at Hoffenheim, and they will be joined in the Bundesliga 2 next season by Nurnberg, which lost 4-1 at third-place Schalke.
Hamburg also lost, 3-2, at Mainz on Saturday, but the club can still secure its safety with a win in the two-legged relegation playoff.
Champions Bayern Munich closed out the season with a 1-0 home win over Stuttgart thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Claudio Pizarro, while second- place Borussia Dortmund rolled to a 4-0 victory at Hertha Berlin with two goals from Robert Lewandowski, who finishes as the top scorer in the Bundesliga with 20 goals.
Augsburg topped Eintracht, 2-1, with goals from Ragnar Klavan and Andre Hahn, and Edgar Prib's 80th-minute tally handed Hannover a 3-2 victory over Freiburg.
