Central Arkansas football coach Clint Conque has named junior Wynrick Smothers as the team's starting quarterback.

Smothers, a 6-foot-1, 208-pound junior from Destrehan, La., appeared in five games with one start last season as Central Arkansas finished 9-4 and reached the second round of the FCS playoffs.

He completed 29-of-59 pass attempts for 374 yards and one touchdown.

In his career, Smothers is 46-of-92 for 558 yards and one touchdown. He also has rushed the ball 57 times for 231 yards and three touchdowns.

Smothers won the starting job over sophomores Ryan Howard and Jacoby Walker, a transfer from Arkansas.

Central Arkansas opens its season on Sept. 1 at Ole Miss.
