ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) Oleg Shatov's calm finish lifted Zenit St. Petersburg to a 2-1 win over Gent in the Champions League on Tuesday and into top spot in Group H.
Brazilian striker Hulk set up both Zenit's goals, providing a cross for Artyom Dzyuba's 35th-minute header and playing in Shatov to score what proved to be the winner in the 67th when the midfielder flicked the ball over onrushing Gent goalkeeper Matz Sels.
Belgian champion Gent enjoyed a majority of possession and scored a 56th-minute equalizer when Sven Kums' cross found Thomas Matton at the far post.
Hulk forced a spectacular save from Sels with a powerful 88th-minute free kick. Sels was also key in stopping Zenit from taking an early lead, leaping at full stretch in the third minute to stop defender Ezequiel Garay's free kick.
Zenit lost defender Nicolas Lombaerts, a former Gent player, to injury when he appeared to strain his leg in a challenge for the ball with half an hour remaining.
The win lifts Russia's Zenit to first place in Group H with two wins from its first two games. Three points further back in second place is Valencia, which beat Lyon 1-0 in Tuesday's other game. Gent and Lyon have one point each.
