Phoenix Coyotes forward Raffi Torres has been suspended 25 games for his hit against Chicago's Marian Hossa.

NHL discipline czar Brendan Shanahan announced the lengthy ban on Saturday, one day after meeting with Torres in New York.

Torres was given an indefinite suspension on Wednesday for his open-ice hit on Hossa in the first period of Phoenix's 3-2 overtime win on Tuesday. He left his feet to deliver the shot, which forced Hossa off the ice on a stretcher and to the hospital.

Hossa has not yet been cleared to return.

Torres, who was not penalized on the play, has already served one game of the suspension, as he missed Game 4 of the Western Conference quarterfinal on Thursday. Should the 25 games not be served by the conclusion of the playoffs, the remaining games will carry over to the start of the 2012-13 campaign.
