Schalke midfielder Kluge out until January

Schalke midfielder Peer Kluge will be sidelined through the Bundesliga's winter break after having surgery to fix a meniscus problem in his left knee, the club announced Tuesday.

Kluge, 30, had the surgery Monday and will now miss the remaining six matches before the winter break from mid-December to mid-January, as well as the last three games in Group J of the Europa League.

Schalke is second in the Bundesliga, four points behind Bayern Munich, and in first place in its Europa group. The Royal Blues host AEK Larnaca on Thursday in the Europa League, then visit Hannover on Sunday in their next league game.
